LAND SURFACE ANALYSIS
THE DETERMINATION OF LANDSCAPE PROCESSES AND CONDITIONS using historical landscape patterns will be used to forecast which areas are likely to experience development and to determine the effects of the development on local infrastructure resources. The project will acquire land use and cover data for selected time frames (1930's, 1950's, 1970's, 1990's). The historical data will be acquired from available historical photography. The 1990's data will be acquired from National Technical Means (NTM) derived digital orthophoto quadrangles. Socio-economic data will also be acquired including Census, infrastructure, zoning, critical habitats, and restricted lands. The data will be processed and interpreted with the GIS.
The land will be characterized by the various data sets and techniques will be developed for determining landscape change. The historical land use/land cover data for the selected time frames (1930s, 1950s, 1970s, and 1990s) will be used to determine the locations, extent, and kind of development that has occurred and the rate that infrastructure resources are being preempted by one another or by other conflicting land uses. Using the historical landscape patterns, land use prediction models will be investigated to forecast which areas are likely to experience development and what effect the development will have on the local infrastructure resources.
Large amounts of geologic and hydrologic data exist in the Infrastructure Resources Project study area. The Infrastructure Resources Project will compile and convert some of those data to a digital format, and collect and interpret new data as necessary. The geologic and hydrologic data will be integrated with land use data in a Geographic Information System (GIS). Models will be developed that relate resource occurrence to quality, quantity, and availability based on environmental and land use impacts. The databases will be available in both map and digital format to enable users with varying access to computers to explore land-use alternatives and assess the impacts of various choices.
