The primary goal of this effort is to improve the use of earth-science research results in designing hazard mitigation, disaster response, and long-term urban planning. We expect that better use of natural hazards information will reduce human and economic losses from these hazards. This goal recognizes that although substantial knowledge about natural hazards now exists, implementation of mitigation measures and preparedness actions that reduce losses have lagged. Typically, many private firms and government agencies have more advanced response plans (what to do after disaster strikes) than aggressive actions to lessen losses beforehand.
