RMMC - State Mapping Liaisons USGS Digital Data Status

T he mission of the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National Mapping Division (NMD) is to meet the Nation's need for basic geospatial data, ensuring access to and advancing the application of these data and other related earth science information for users worldwide.

The NMD has assigned Coordination and Requirements responsibility for each state to "State Mapping Liaisons". These liaisons form the professional communications network between state and regional interest and the Mapping Division. These liaisons carry out the following activities:

  • Coordinate national geospatial data policy and standards
  • Provide leadership for the management of earth science
    data and information.
  • Provide information on the acquisition, management
    and dissemination of geospatial data.
  • Improve the understanding and application of geospatial
    data and technology.

In an effort to accomplish this mission and leverage funds appropriated for map and data production, the USGS encourages cooperation with a variety of partners where the participants share the cost and or production of multipurpose standard geospatial products.
