Exploring Africa's Physical and Cultural Geography with GIS

Activity 3 - Answer Key

Step 11

A) [The pipelines in the East are importing oil because there are no oil deposits in the

areas. Most pipelines in the North and West are exporting oil from the oil deposits.]

B) [Libya, Algeria, and Egypt are countries that use pipelines to export oil.

Also the countries of Tunisia, Gabon, Congo, and Nigeria.]

C) [Morocco, Zambia, and South Africa are countries that use pipelines to import oil.

Zimbabwe, and Mozambique also import some oil.]

D) [Several hypotheses as to why the oil deposit in the Sudan does not have a pipeline.

It is too far from the ocean to build a pipeline. A pipeline would be too

expensive to build.

The deposit might be too small of a deposit to make it economically

feasible to extract.

Water is used to be pumped into the oil deposits to bring the oil to the

surface. The Sudan deposit is located in the desert where there

is no large amounts of water.]

Step 15

A) [All "very large" mining sites in Africa

South Africa Black Rock Mn (Manganese)

Sishen Fe, Mn (Iron, Manganese)

Postmasburg Mn (Manganese)

Prieska Cu, Sn, Zn (Copper, Tin, Zinc)

Steelpoort V, Cr (Vanadium, Chromium)

Mapochs Fe (Iron)

Thabazimbi Fe (Iron)

Middelvit Cr (Chromium)

Zimbabwe Wankie Coal

Zambia Roan Antelope Cu, Co (Copper, Cobalt)

Kitwe-Nkana Cu, Co (Copper, Cobalt)

Mufulira Cu (Copper)

Nchanga Cu, Co (Copper, Cobalt)

Chingola Cu, Co (Copper, Cobalt)

Zaire Kipushi Zn, Cu (Zinc, Copper)

Kambove Cu, Co (Copper, Cobalt)

Kolwezi Cu, Co (Copper, Cobalt)

Egypt Bur Safaga Phosphate

Abu Tartur Phosphate

Algeria Hassi Messaoud Oil

Djebel Onk Phosphate

Beni-Saf Fe (Iron)

Tbessa Phosphate

Ouenza Fe (Iron)

Tunisia Redeyef Phosphate

M'Dilla Phosphate

Morocco Khouribga Phosphate, U (Uranium)

Youssoufia Phosphate, U (Uranium)

Western Sahara Bou-Craa Phosphate

Mauritania Guelb el-Rhein Fe (Iron)

Senegal Taiba Ndiaye Phosphate

Guinea Boke Bauxite

Fria Bauxite

Nimba Fe (Iron)

Sierra Leone Mokanji Bauxite

Togo Anecho Phosphate

Gabon Moanda Mn (Manganese)

B) [Correlation between the type of relief and very large mineral deposits.

Almost all of the large mineral deposits are in the High Plains or Low Plains.

Flat lands, probably under water at one time and under a lot of pressure.]

C) [In the High and Low Plains along the coast, there's more bauxite and phosphates.

The Low Plains inland, there's more heavy metals (Iron, Manganese, Copper, Cobalt)]

Step 16

A) [Correlation between manufacturing and population density.

Manufacturing usually means higher pay which brings in people.

Manufacturing sustains population; Population sustains manufacturing.]

B) [The correlation holds true. Areas along the Ivory Coast and Mediterranean Sea have

high populations, and more manufacturing where products can be shipped.]

Step 17

A) [Three patterns when all minerals are clicked on.

Most mining is done in areas of high populations and closer to the coasts

for exporting.  Most mining is happening in more temperate climates.

Almost all mining of some sort is done in the low plains and low mountains.]
