Exploring Africa's Physical and Cultural Geography with GIS

Activity 4 - Answer Key

Question 1

[The majority of the earthquakes in the world are located at, or near

the plate boundaries. Plates are always moving and build up pressure.

Convergent boundaries exist where plates collide creating mountain

chains and volcanoes. Divergent boundaries exist where plates spread

apart. Transform boundaries exist where plates slide past each other.]

Question 2

[Most of Africa's earthquakes occur in the middle of the African continent,

or plate, far from any plate boundaries.]

Question 3

[The African Rift Zone is located in the countries of Ethiopia and Kenya.]

Question 4

[Earthquakes affect people along the Western boundaries of North and

South America because the plate boundaries are along the western

boundary of those continents. Plate boundaries are far from the

continent of Africa; the earthquake potential is minimal.]

Question 5

[Largest recorded earthquake in the world was 9.3 in Indonesia in

the year of 1996.]

Question 6

[The majority of the world's volcanoes are located around the

"Ring of Fire" around the Pacific Ocean. The oceanic plates are all

diving (converging) with other plates causing the diving plates to

melt and push molten rock to the surface, erupting as volcanoes.]

Question 7

[Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest in Africa at 5895 meters, located near

the border between Kenya and Tanzania.]
