(1) From data you have ordered from a USGS Earth Science Information Center (ESIC): Black and White DOQs are normally stored as .bil files. Add as image theme. Make sure you have a .hdr header file. Color and Color Infrared DOQs are normally stored as .bip files. Add as image theme. For Geo-TIFF formatted DOQs: Add as image theme. Header is imbedded in file. In ArcGIS, add DOQs as layers.
(2) From DOQs on USGS County-Format CD-ROMs: DOQs on county CD-ROMs are in a compressed .jpg format. Because they are a special type of .jpg format, an ArcView extension is required to load county CD DOQs.
This extension is available from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
Note that other USGS DOQs are in .bil and .bip formats which do not require the extension; they
can be added directly as image themes.
Loading the DOQ extension:
1) From the following ESRI site, download the DOQ extension:
http://www.esri.com/
Go to User Support
Go to ArcView GIS
Go to User Scripts
Find "DOQ Display Tools" in the listing of scripts.
Download this file and save it in C:\temp or other location. It should be named doqext.zip and is
1.046 MB (7-09-98).
Note: You must have the Dialog Designer extension to run the DOQ extension.
2) Unzip doqext.zip into a locaton on your computer. Three files should result: DOQ_DD.Log,
doq_dd.avx, and doqdrg.pdf. Print the .pdf file if desired; this is the user manual.
3) Copy the extension into the location where ArcView expects it to reside:
c:\esri\av_gis30\arcview\ext32
4) Access ArcView and pull down the Project menu and access Extensions. The choice for
"DOQ/DRG Tools" should be visible. Click on this choice.
Accessing DOQs:
1) Note the new icon on the tool bar containing a plus sign and the letters "DOQ." Use this tool
to add DOQs from a list. Note also a new menu choice entitled "DOQ/DRG Tools."
2) USGS DOQs are cast on the NAD 83 datum. This is important to remember if you add data
in the future data that is on the NAD 27 datum.
The DOQ files may be transferred to a directory on a hard drive and changed with the "Change
DOQ Source" choice under the "DOQ/DRG Tools" menu.
Note that this extension performs many more functions than loading DOQs from a CD as
described in this document.
