World Demographic Data for Use in Spatial Analysis
World demographic data includes fertility, mortality, economic, health, and other measures. A variety of organizations collect world demographic data, but it is often difficult to place it in one file. This site is an attempt to compile various sources of demographic data and therefore make it easy to download and use. These data could be used in courses such as Geography, Demography, Sociology, and Government, to explore demographic variables around the world within a geographic information system (GIS). The data are zipped and in ESRI shapefile format. When unzipped, the user will have 7 files:
demographic data.doc - Description of all field names, MS Word format.
demographics.apr - ArcView 3.x project file.
demography.dbf - Database.
demography.sbn - Spatial Index for ArcView GIS.
demography.sbx - Spatial Index for ArcView GIS.
demography.shp - Feature file for ArcView GIS, in latitude-longitude (geographic) coordinates.
demography.shx - Spatial Index for ArcView GIS.
The demography.shp file can be loaded into a variety of GIS software programs, such as ArcView GIS by ESRI. Students can then explore the data.
